We received an email this week from a woman inquiring about the definition of “petite” and we thought it was time to address the unusual nature of the term.

Petite is a very peculiar term in the fashion industry. While petite translates from French as “small,” in apparel it specifically means 5’4″ or shorter, without regard to shape. So, yes, it is very possible to be both plus-sized (dress size 14+) and petite (5’4″ or shorter).
